Marie Dorothy Dolph was a landscape artist. She was among the first commercially successful artists in Wyoming during the first half of the 20th century. She was widely recognized in Wyoming during her lifetime, although today she is practically unknown. She was born in Baraboo, WI in 1884. While at the Chicago Art Institute she studied with Alphonse Mucha and Antonin Sterba. She married Royal Jay Dolph in 1913 and homesteaded at Cassa, WY on the Platte River, a few miles southeast of present day Glendo, WY. The Dolphs settled on another homestead west of Casper -- about two miles from the Goose Egg Ranch -- in the 1920s. Her works were commissioned by F.J. Haynes for his store in Yellowstone Park. She painted 1,465 pictures for him to be sold at the park's concession stores. She primarily produced miniatures, which were easier to produce, ship, and sell. Her paintings were popular among Yellowstone visitors. During the 1930s she traveled widely in search of subject matter. She moved to Post Falls, ID in her later years to be closer to her sons. She continued to paint until her death at 94.

This painting is likely one of her Yellowstone miniatures.
